Often we connect with people who are interested in attending a Glow Retreat for a transformative experience. Of course, many people are just looking for a break from their everyday lives with a slice of sunshine, some healthy food and an outstanding daily yoga practice. And they’ll find all three with us! But some are searching for deeper purpose. Those individuals are often interested in spiritual retreats. But what exactly does that mean?

A Brief History of Spiritual Retreats

Spiritual retreats date back to the 16th century Roman Catholic Church, where they emerged as a way to aid priests, religious orders, and other individuals in their quest for spiritual renewal. Over time, retreats have also been influenced by spiritual traditions that include Asian religions and pre-Christian European religions.

The Ignatian retreat, popularised by St. Ignatius Loyola in the 16th century, involved a period of withdrawal for spiritual exercises and silence to deepen one's connection with God / the divine. To retreat from everyday life and go toward a connection with a greater purpose: the roots of spiritual retreats are clear and have carried through to the modern day.

Christian retreats focus on a withdrawal from daily activities to focus on encountering God through prayer and meditation, focusing on the deliberate act of seeking spiritual growth and renewal. Retreats are often compared to pilgrimages, focusing on an inner journey towards self-discovery and spiritual transformation.

Despite having ancient roots, spiritual retreats are still widely practised in modern religion, to strengthen individual faith and connection to the divine.

And What About Non-Religious Spiritual Retreats?

Spiritual retreats have their roots in religion, but not all spiritualism has religious roots. Non-religious spiritual retreats offer individuals an opportunity to find mindfulness, and healing in natural settings. These retreats focus on wellness and personal growth, providing a beneficial experience for participants.

While not tied to any specific religious tradition, non-religious retreats can still be deeply spiritual, offering practices like guided meditation, mindfulness, yoga and more. You’ll find all of these at our retreats. Taking time away from everyday life to look inwards allows individuals to benefit from time to reflect, which often helps strengthen spiritual connection.

What are the Benefits of Non-Religious Spiritual Retreats?

Attending a non-religious spiritual retreat may offer attendees a host of benefits:

Develop a Stronger Connection to Self

Having a dedicated space away from the distractions of daily life, guests can focus on themselves, their thoughts, and their spiritual well-being. This time for self-reflection can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and a stronger self-connection.

Make Inner Peace a Priority

For those feeling overwhelmed by stress and seeking peace, retreats offer an opportunity to unwind and engage in practices like meditation, yoga and mindfulness, activities that promote inner tranquillity. This purpose is one that many can maintain beyond the retreat and take back into their day to day lives.

Find Connection

Non-religious spiritual retreats can create a supportive environment where individuals can interact with like-minded guests on similar journeys of self-discovery. The power of connection is boundless.

Have Fun

It’s not all about wellness, meditation and yoga! Spiritual and wellness retreats can involve a healthy dose of fun, too - which is always good for the soul!
