Why have we chosen the Greek island of Lefkada for our June 2024 retreat?

So we know Ibiza is special, but what's so special about Lefkada?

In our time, we have run well over 100 retreats in Ibiza - since 2010 actually when I moved over to Ibiza and Co-Directed Ibiza Retreats. Back then we were the only retreat company of that time. Of course now you can find hundreds of retreat options on Ibiza - some incredibly unique!

So, Ibiza is very well know for its healing and magical properties and we have had the pleasure and honour of welcoming many of our Glow guests ‘home’ to Ibiza year upon year.

However, we felt we would like to try somewhere new. So we searched high and low for a place which held the same magical energy as Ibiza, but offered a new perspective. After all, change is good and we were ready to expand our horizons. And then we found the Greek Island of Lefkada. And because Lefkada is still relatively untouched when it comes to tourism, you get that laid-back feel which Ibiza had maybe a few years ago. Beaches are emptier, roads are quieter and there is no party scene at all! You can read about our Lefkada retreat here.

A little bit about Lefkada

Described as a jewel of an island in the Ionian Sea, Lefkada is famous for its lush vegetation, cool green pine forests (just like Ibiza!) and array of white sand Caribbean style beaches.

During our research, we discovered that there are in fact huge numbers of similarities between the two islands.

In Name

We all know Ibiza as the ‘White Island’ due to its white architecture. Lefkada is also know as the 'White Island' owes its ‘White Island’ name to the huge white cliffs towering over the Ionian Sea that characterise the southern part of the island, know as the cape of Lefkata (lefkos is the Greek word for "white").

In Geography

Just like Ibiza, Lefkada is mountainous and fertile, covered  with dense and verdant vegetation. The popularity of Lefkada is mostly due to its heavenly landscape and stunning beaches with endless sand, impressive turquoise waters and majestic vertical rocky cliffs.

Lefkada is slightly smaller than Ibiza - just 325km² compared to Ibiza's 571km² .

In Mythology

Lefkada has been linked to the Greek Goddess of Love Aphrodite, after it is said she decided to jump from the cape when she had discovered her love Adonis had died. Of course, due to the fact she was a Goddess, she came out of the waters completely unharmed!

For Ibiza, the Carthaginian goddess Tanit was worshiped as the goddess of sexuality, fertility and death. Ibiza is known as her island since the Carthaginians brought her in 600 BC when they settled in Ibiza.

In History

Both islands have been invaded and occupied by many cultures that add to their rich history and beauty. They share Corinthian, Byzantine, Roman & Moorish occupations as well as many pirates along the way!
